Pieces we restore

The teak we are asked about most in Newport Beach

Every item behaves differently under the same sun. Tabletops take heat and spills, loungers take body oils, and slatted backs simply take time. Here is how each is handled.

Tabletops

The hardest-worked surface you own. Hot dishes, sunscreen and standing water mean these usually need the deepest sanding of any piece.

Slatted seating

Dozens of edges and gaps. Machines cannot reach most of it, so the honest measure of a restoration is what the slat sides look like.

Folding and reclining frames

Hardware is removed, the mechanism cleaned and lubricated, and the wood finished with the piece open.

Steamer and deck chairs

Classic marine forms with fine sections. Aggressive prep thins them, so these get hand work almost throughout.

Planters and screens

Constantly damp on one face. They need drainage checked as much as they need refinishing.

Umbrella poles and bases

Frequently forgotten, always in full sun, and the fastest way to make a restored set look unfinished.

Assessment

Signs your teak is ready for restoration

Not every weathered piece needs work immediately. These are the indicators worth acting on rather than waiting out.

Uniform grey surface

Oxidised fibre at the very top of the grain. Reversible, but it means protection ran out some time ago.

Rough or fuzzy texture

Soft early-wood has eroded. Sanding levels it; leaving it lets water sit deeper in the grain.

Water no longer beads

The clearest practical test. Soak-in means bare wood absorbing everything that lands on it.

Dark spotting

Mildew, tannin bleed or a reaction under fixings — almost always removable with the right chemistry.

Fine checking

Hairline splits along the grain from moisture cycling. Sanding and sealing slows the progression.

Movement in the joints

Structural rather than cosmetic, and cheapest to correct while the piece is already stripped.

Teak Restoration Laguna Beach

A Harbor Town Built Around Teak

Newport Beach is unusual among the cities we serve because teak here isn’t limited to patio furniture — it’s baked into the identity of the harbor itself. Walk the docks off Bayside Drive or through the Balboa Island ferry landing and you’ll see teak swim steps, cockpit soles, and cap rails on boats moored a few feet from teak dining tables on the very same waterfront patios. We’re one of the few local outfits that services both the furniture on the dock and the decking on the boat tied to it.

Balboa Island’s tightly packed bungalows and Little Island’s Grand Canal-facing patios put teak furniture within a few feet of brackish bay water, which behaves differently than open ocean spray — more still, more humid, and prone to algae bloom on nearby seawalls that eventually reaches nearby wood. Furniture crammed onto narrow front patios along Marine Avenue also takes constant foot traffic and bike parking bumps that regular coastal furniture never sees.

Across the channel, Balboa Peninsula runs the full range from the packed cottages near the Fun Zone to the quieter beachfront homes toward the Wedge, and teak loungers there face direct, unfiltered ocean wind off the sand — a harsher exposure than the calmer harbor side just blocks away. Lido Isle and the Port Streets add another layer: newer construction, tidier HOA standards, and teak furniture chosen to match a more curated coastal-modern look.

Back Bay and the Eastbluff area sit further from salt spray but catch reflected heat off the estuary’s open water, aging teak more through UV and dryness than through corrosion. Meanwhile, members at the Newport Beach Yacht Club and Balboa Yacht Club bring us both boat brightwork and the teak furniture on their patios and clubhouse decks, since the two often need attention on the same schedule.

Fashion Island and the Corona del Mar-adjacent Newport Center area round out the city with newer commercial and residential teak installations — built-in benches, planters, and outdoor dining features — that need a different maintenance rhythm than a decades-old dining set on Lido Isle.

We work directly with Newport Harbor slip owners and marina staff, plus HOAs on Lido Isle and Balboa Island, to coordinate dock access and narrow-street parking for both furniture and boat teak work.

Hand-finished

Every grain inspected, sanded and sealed by a master craftsman.

Step by step

From first call to
finished patio.

01

The call

A few photos and a description usually tell us the likely scope and rough range before we ever visit.

02

Disassembly where needed

Thirty minutes on site. Piece count, condition grade, finish options and a fixed written price.

03

Disassembly where needed

Slatted loungers and folding chairs are opened up so the hidden faces get the same treatment as the visible ones.

04

Clean, neutralise, dry

The wood has to be genuinely dry before finish goes on. Oil over trapped moisture clouds and lifts.

05

Build the protection

Thin coats, wiped back, repeated. Depth comes from the number of coats, never from the thickness of one.

06

Handover

Reassembly, a final wipe down, and a walkthrough of what to watch over the next twelve months.

Also: Ipe Deck Restoration

Ipe decks need a different hand — we do those too.

Ipe is a dense tropical hardwood, not teak — it takes harsher cleaning chemistry, slower sanding and a penetrating marine-grade oil to bring back its rich chocolate-brown color. The same crew that restores your teak furniture can deep-clean, sand and re-oil your ipe (or mahogany) decking in the same visit, so the whole outdoor space comes back to life at once.

Craft learned slowly. Standards set early.

Restoration rewards patience more than speed: the extra grit, the wiped-back coat, the hour spent on slat edges nobody photographs. Those are the decisions that decide how the work looks in year three, and they are the ones we refuse to rush.

Local Teak Care

Maintaining Teak Around Newport Harbor

Harbor-facing teak furniture on Balboa Island or Bayside Drive deals with still, humid air that encourages mildew and green algae staining faster than open-ocean exposure does, so we recommend cleaning harbor-side pieces on a shorter interval than beachfront furniture just a mile away.

Boat teak — cockpit soles, swim platforms, cap rails — takes constant foot traffic, standing water, and UV reflected straight off the bay, which wears finishes unevenly compared to stationary patio furniture; we treat deck seams and caulking as part of the same visit rather than as a separate marine specialty.

On the peninsula’s ocean-facing blocks near the Wedge or the Fun Zone, wind-driven sand acts as a mild abrasive on teak loungers, so a gentle rinse before any scrubbing helps avoid scratching a finish that’s already taking a beating from direct sun and salt air.

Frequently Asked

Teak restoration in Newport Beach — answers to the questions we hear most.

Do you work on boat teak, or only patio furniture?

Both. We regularly restore teak decking, swim steps, and cap rails on boats in Newport Harbor alongside patio and dining furniture, often for the same client in one visit.

Can you access docks and slips in Newport Harbor for boat teak work?

Yes, we coordinate directly with marina staff or slip owners to schedule dock access and complete the work on-site.

Why does my teak on Balboa Island get mildew spots faster than my friend's on the peninsula?

Harbor-side locations have calmer, more humid air with less wind to dry the wood, which encourages mildew growth faster than the open, breezier ocean-facing peninsula.

Do you handle narrow-street or limited-parking jobs on Balboa Island or Lido Isle?

Yes, we’re used to Newport’s tight island streets and coordinate timing and parking with homeowners or HOAs in advance.

Can you restore built-in teak benches or decking at a yacht club or clubhouse?

Yes, we’ve worked on yacht club decks and can section large areas so the space stays partially usable during the project.

Is boat teak maintained differently than patio furniture?

Marine teak deals with more standing water and foot traffic, so we pay extra attention to seams, caulking, and drainage compared to stationary furniture.

How far in advance should we book?

Spring and early summer fill quickly in Orange County. Two to three weeks’ notice is typical in season, and less outside it.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. On-site estimates across Orange County are free and typically returned within 24 hours in writing, with the scope broken down piece by piece.

Do you take on single pieces?

We do. A single dining table or a pair of loungers is a normal job, and it is often the sensible way to test how a finish will look before committing a whole set.

Do you work with HOAs and management companies?

Regularly. Certificates of insurance are issued to boards and managers before mobilisation, and larger Orange County common-area work is phased around amenity schedules.

Guides

Sanding vs. stripping exterior wood

Both are preparation methods with different jobs. Choosing wrong either wastes wood or leaves contamination behind.

How UV exposure damages outdoor wood

Sun does not just fade colour. It breaks down the material that holds wood fibres together, and it degrades the finish protecting

How often should teak furniture be refinished?

There is no universal interval. There is a simple test that answers it for your specific furniture in about ten seconds.
